Since Cameron is going to school in Virginia, we knew that we had to take a family trip to go and see him. We planned our trip in between Scott's work schedule and so that we could see a couple of Cameron's soccer games. It was a really great trip. Just very fast - as we were pretty much either driving or sleeping,and we did much more driving than sleeping.
First we stopped by Washington DC, as we knew it was the only time we would see it at night. We drove to Woodbridge afterwards and met up with Missy. Ken was still in Tucson working. We went to dinner with Missy at a great little place, The Silver Diner.
While we were eating with Missy, Elder Colby Oliverson, who is from our ward and serving in the DC area, living only a few miles from where Ken and Missy live. He called to find out where we were (I had talked to his mother about our going there and we swapped phone numbers.) and came and visited us over at Missy's apartment.
We got up early the next morning and drove back up to DC and did a quick tour up there. We tried to see as much as we could in the few hours that we were there.
As well as seeing the Vietnam Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, we also walked around the World War II monument to. We also saw the President's helicopter take off from the White House. Then it flew right over us. Kelsey is in DC doing an internship with BYU, and we worked in a few minutes to see her. We had a little misunderstanding as she was waiting at the front of the White House and we were waiting in the back. We finally met up and had a good visit.
Virginia is really a very beautiful state. It has rolling hills, lots of trees and the colors were absolutely beautiful. Cameron is in Buena Vista, which is situated in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains. They aren't like our mountains, but they sure are beautiful. The weather was in the low 70's. Perfect travel weather.
We arrived in Buena Vista about an hour before Cameron's game. We enjoyed sitting in the back of the car, watching the game. We saw Cameron score a goal, and assist one that Zac McCulloch scored.
We took Cameron, Zac, Jared, and Noelle (she went to Brighton, and flew out with the boys in August) to dinner. Then we dropped them off and Cameron wanted to stay with us, so he came and slept at the hotel with us. We stayed up late and slept in. We ate breakfast at a truck stop. Cameron had class and practice, so we hopped back in the car and drove over to West Virginia.
We arrived back to Buena Vista, just when Cameron was done with practice. Zac and he came with us to Lynchburg for dinner and a movie. We took a side road, along the Blue Ridge Parkway and saw some of Cameron's favorite views.
We even stopped there on our way back. The view was spectacular. The stars were amazing. It really is a beautiful place. Our last day with Cameron was spent driving to Greensboro, North Carolina. He rode with the team and we drove ourselves. While we were there we met up with Ken and Missy. We drove around Greensboro - we saw mom and dad's old home there and the old American Express building. We watched Cameron's game and even though they lost the game, it was so great to be able to watch them play.
Great 5 day vacation. Great seeing and being with Cameron. Extra bonuses - seeing Ken and Missy, Kelsey, and Colby.
